Neil’s yard is located just a short stroll away from Covent Garden tube station, making it easy to reach from our central youth hostel in London. It’s the ideal spot to choose if you want your pictures to be packed with brightly coloured and fascinating looking shops, although you should get there early if you want to snap an image which manages to avoid the crowds which flock there.

The Shard

The Shard is an iconic building which offers a number of different photo opportunities. From the distance it towers over the skyline, from the pavement below it looms impressively toward the sky, but perhaps the most impressive images are those which involve the stunning views to be seen from the viewing platform on the top floor. Whether you use it as the background for a portrait, or as the subject for the picture itself, a 360-degree view of the London skyline will look stunning.

Kings Cross Light Tunnel

The tunnel which links different parts of the London Underground system might sound like an unlikely suggestion, but the Tube has got a visual style all of its own. Traditional tiled tunnels abound in various parts of the system, but the tunnel linking St. Pancras to Kings Cross is something else entirely. It has walls which constantly change colour as lights shift down on them and offers a futuristic backdrop for any pictures you want to take.

The Churchill Arms

The interiors and exteriors of traditional London pubs form a fantastic backdrop or subject for photographs, with some of them dating back as far as medieval times. The Churchill Arms, close to Notting Hill Gate, stands out as extra special thanks to the fact that every inch of the exterior, more or less, is covered with a vibrant display of brightly coloured flowers. Visit in summer to get the full impact, although at Christmas, lights and baubles replace the plant life to an equally stunning effect.

Tate Modern Observation Deck

The Tate Modern is packed with opportunities to take photographs of, or in front of, some of the greatest art works ever created. It also offers an observation deck on the tenth floor, giving access to views in all directions, but especially back across the river Thames. Unlike the Shard, another vantage point with fantastic views, the Tate Modern observation deck can be accessed free of charge.

Waterloo Bridge

There are bridges across the Thames which look more picturesque or architecturally striking than Waterloo Bridge, but few offer views to match. Find the right spot on the bridge and you can take stunning, postcard style images which include iconic landmarks like the Thames itself, the London Eye and the Houses of Parliament.

Notting Hill

There are many reasons to visit Notting Hill, ranging from spotting locations from the film of the same name to grabbing an antique bargain on Portobello Road Market, but if you’re looking for striking imagery then look no further than the multi-coloured house facades you’ll find along streets like Hillgate Street, Farm Place and Uxbridge Street.

Regent Street at Christmas

In the weeks leading up to 25th December, the whole of London is transformed into one gigantic, dazzling Christmas display. Few places in the city provide a more photogenic example of this than Regent Street, which combines the twinkling of a million tasteful Christmas lights with a backdrop of striking buildings. Walk from Oxford Street down to Piccadilly Circus and you’ll soon have an amazing collection of images.

Hampstead

London has often been described as a collection of individual villages gathered to form one fantastic city, and few places demonstrate why this idea has taken root better than Hampstead. Strolling the streets lined with charming houses, boutique shops and hidden passages it can be easy to forget you’re in London altogether, and Hampstead Heath offers wide open green spaces for you to take London photographs with a difference.

Columbia Road Flower Market

There are markets of every type all over London, selling everything from clothes to fresh fish and meat, but few are as beautiful to photograph as the Columbia Road Flower Market. It’s packed with individual stalls and shops, each one positively bursting with bright flowers and plants. It takes place every Sunday and it’s the perfect choice if you want to take some pictures in which colour is the absolute king.
